Set within a mixed-use residence in the coastal town of Lagos, Portugal, this kitchen refresh was developed to elevate the atmosphere of a key space — used both as a private home and an Airbnb rental.
The goal was to bring a more relaxed and vibrant identity to the kitchen without removing its original character. Rather than a full renovation, the design embraced existing elements such as the black doors, granite countertops, and porcelain floor tiles, building a new visual language around them.
The client’s love for red inspired the bold color choice for the lower cabinets, which pairs naturally with the warm tones of the granite. To bring contrast and brightness, the upper cabinets were refinished in white, replacing the original yellow-toned natural wood and softening the overall look.
The existing wall tiles were refreshed with white tile paint, with special attention given to joints and to concealing a dated floral border that ran across the perimeter. The updated palette was completed with black furnishings, and new black cabinet handles in a more contemporary shape, tying in with the original doors, along with carefully selected accessories in green and beige tones to complement the floor and cabinetry.
The result is a space that feels both casual and connected to local character — a welcoming kitchen that becomes a central point of the home and a memorable highlight for guests.
